Santander sit 15th in LaLiga on 8 points after 8 matches, and the table makes uncomfortable reading. Two wins, two draws, four defeats. 13 goals scored, 23 conceded, a goal difference of -10.

The split is the story. At home, Santander have won 2, drawn 2 and lost none. Away from home they have lost all 4 of their away fixtures, without a single win or draw. Eight points, and every one of them collected on their own pitch.

Their latest outing, on Sunday 11 October against Valencia, finished 2-2. A draw, and the 1D that closes a run of LWLLD across the last five league games.

Next comes the test of that away record. Santander travel to Osasuna on Sunday 18 October for matchday 9, and they go there with nothing to show from four road trips so far.

One player is keeping the numbers respectable at the other end. Yassir Zabiri has 7 goals, level with Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid and Sergio Camello of Rayo Vallecano, and one behind Raphinha of Barça on 12. For a side in the bottom half, that is a striking return.

Above them, the gap is already wide. Barça lead on 24 points with a goal difference of +27. Atleti have 19, Real Betis have 19, Real Madrid have 18. Then a drop: Sevilla FC on 14, Real Sociedad on 13.

So what is the realistic target? Survival, plainly. Four away games, four defeats, minus ten. Fix the road form or the home form has to stay perfect.

Santander cannot keep asking their own crowd to carry the whole season.
